Plans for Occoneechee splash pool tweaked

Officials with the Department of Conservation and Recreation are moving forward with plans to install a splash park at Occoneechee State Park. But first, they were required to obtain public input on an amendment to the park’s master plan, initially adopted on June 9, 2003.

Scouts launch battle over leftover fishing line

Ever gotten tangled in fishing line, or have you seen a fish tangled in line? It’s not good for anything or anyone so some local scouts are working to solve the problem at Kerr Lake. Eagle Scout Coleman Hopfer and his Troop 605 built and installed fishing line recycling stations at all of the Kerr Lake boat ramps managed by the state parks system this past Saturday.

The Cashion Fishing Rods 'End of Year' Team Tournament Bass Fishing Trail Qualifier #7 on Saturday, October 10th, at Kerr Lake was very interesting and the results for the 27 teams were close. Ryan Rigsbee & Bubba Haywood just barely won with 5 bass weighing 14.08 lbs to take 1st Place and 1st Place TWT for a total of $1,320!

High water receding - Come on to Kerr Lake and camp

The water is receding along the shores of Kerr Lake, hitting a high at a little over 305 feet above mean sea level, with full pool normal being at 300 ft. This morning the water, which is rapidly receding was less than 304.5 ft. That said, US Army Corps of Engineers reports no significance loss of campsite use due to water as does Virginia State Parks.

South Central Fair returns next week

Another sure sign of fall, the South Central Fair arrives in Chase City next week for it’s 105th edition. First held on the lawn of the old Mecklenburg Mineral Springs Hotel, the fair quickly became an institution.

Kerr Lake Level Rises

Because of the heavy rains, both around the lake and upstream, the level of Kerr Lake has risen more than seven feet in the last week. The most recent reading (at Noon Monday, 11/5) shows the lake at 303.23. It was at about 296 feet on Monday of last week. Water is being released from Kerr Lake into Lake Gaston.

As those who live in the area can attest to, we are getting some much needed rain here at the lake. As of 8 am, the average rainfall lake wide in the last 24 hours was 0.69 inches, and our elevation has come up to 296.39 from the previous 295 earlier this week. These levels are projected to increase.

Water transfer meeting postponed again

A state committee has delayed the hearing for Henderson’s inter-basin transfer request for the second time since July. The Environmental Management Committee, which oversees and adopts rules for several divisions of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, initially set the hearing for July but rescheduled it for September.

Tim Richardson and Steve Dudzinski, neighbors who live near Kerr Lake, were trolling for striped bass on the north end of the 50,000-acre impoundment when they landed what Richardson has documented as the third largest blue catfish catch in Virginia.
