Three boats were heavily damaged in a fire at Satterwhite Point Marina about 7:20 Thursday night. Officials indicate there were no injuries.

One eyewitness is quoted as saying there appeared to be an explosion on one of the boats, triggering the fire. Two houseboats and a ski boat suffered the major damage.

Crews worked Friday morning to repair minor damage to the marina's docks. And it was operating again with Manager Catherine Hughes saying they were launching boats from their storage area, that the gas pumps were open and people with boats docked there had full access.

A marine salvage company towed the burned-out hulks of the three boats to the public boat launch ramp at the marina on Friday morning. That ramp will remain closed until further notice.

Satterwhite Point Marina is located in the 6400 block of Satterwhite Point Road not far from Henderson in Vance County and is operated by lease from the state of North Carolina.

The houseboat on which the explosion occurred belonged to Allyn Broderick. He was not on board at the time and says he had no idea what caused the explosion.

David Pearson said he was at the marina when the fire started, and says he tried to put out the flames with a hose. But the fire was just too intense, he said, and the flames destroyed his houseboat as well. He says he basically lost everything in the fire.

The third boat damaged, a ski boat, belonged to Bill Moore who says it wasn't totally destroyed.

Hughes praised Vance County Fire and Rescue for their quick response. And Pearson said he was glad he was around. "If no one was here, this whole place could have gone up."
