Lots of large crappie are being taken from the bridge pilings and submerged brushpiles on live minnows and tiny jigs. Lots of bass are being caught, particularly in Bluestone and Grassy Creeks.

Downtown [Henderson] pavilion approved for construction early next year

The section of Interstate 85 running from Dabney Drive to just north of U.S. Route 1 will be completely reopened in November just before Thanksgiving. That is according to NCDOT Assistant Resident Engineer David Jordan who said last week, barring complications from weather, all work along the section of I-85 will be completed before the holiday’s start

Jonathon Guins of Wendell, North Carolina, weighed a two-day cumulative of eight bass totaling 24 pounds, 13 ounces, to win the Bass Fishing League (BFL) Piedmont Division tournament on Kerr Lake. For his win, Guins earned $8,011. Guins said he fished a 2- to 3-mile stretch midlake to catch his fish.

Boater drowns in Kerr Lake

Two dive teams were deployed into Kerr Lake over the weekend after a passenger fell from a sailboat and drowned. The passenger was not wearing a life jacket at the time the incident occurred and fell into an area of the lake where the water depths reach over 80 feet, near buoys 7 and 8, in close proximity to the Ivy Hill Park boat landing.

"I've heard people crying because they're scared and have no place to go," said Viki Whalen. So she had an idea: Open the campground she founded with husband Rollie Whalen to those seeking shelter.
