Home destroyed in fire

A family of four escaped harm after their home on Kingswood Road was destroyed by an early morning fire Tuesday. Clarksville Volunteer Fire Department chief Johnny Shriver said the owner of the home, whom he did not identify, believes the blaze may have started as a result of charcoal left outside on the deck following a cookout.

Results on coal ash still [in Kerr Lake] pending

It could be several weeks before Kerr Lake residents and visitors know whether coal ash has spread downstream from Danville, Va., to Vance County. The Environmental Protection Agency recently collected water samples from Kerr Lake to test for toxic metals and the presence of coal ash, but the results won't be available for weeks.

Governor Vetoes Bill to Relax Boating Education Requirement

Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe has vetoed a bill that would have exempted many boat operators who are over the age of 45 from the state's current boating education requirement. McAuliffe said the change would have made Virginia waterways more dangerous.

For the second time in less than four months, the Clarksville Waste Treatment plant has released raw sewage and storm water into Buggs Island Lake. The most recent occurrence was on Sept. 8 around 4:45 p.m. when 7,500 gallons of wastewater drained into the lake.

NC officials to sample Dan River nearly one year after coal ash spill

Nearly a year after the Duke Energy coal ash spill in the Dan River, officials of the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Division of Water Resources expects to visit the spill site near Eden, NC on Friday (Jan 30, 2015) to take new "water quality" samples. The Dan River feeds into the Roanoke River and Kerr Lake.
