Kerr Lake Boat Ramps Reopen

The Army Corps of Engineers says all of its boat rams are now open. Several were closed because of high water over the last week. The Corps says the lower parking lots of Rudds & Longwood boat ramps remain closed but ramps themselves are open.

The Army Corps of Engineers says it is anticipating a rise in the Kerr Lake elevation to around 307-308 feet by this weekend. Significant water is being released into Kerr Lake from Smith Mountain Lake. Levels about 306 will result in the closing of boat ramps and campgrounds. .

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reported today that all its parks except "Grassy Creek" on Kerr Lake have reopened following the unusually high water of the last several weeks. The Corps says there was "extensive damage" at Grassy Creek and that they are still working on the cleanup there.

Kerr Lake is receding. The elevation Thursday morning is 307.32 and falling. However, the Army Corps warns that forecasters predict some rain in the watershed which, the Corps says, may slow the descent. In addition, the Army Corps says many, but not all, of the day-use areas and boat ramps are reopened. Many campsites have been cleaned or repaired and area ready for campers!

Swimming Cancelled at Kerr Lake Triathlon

This weekend's "Kerr Lake International" triathlon scheduled at Bullocksville State Park will no longer have a 1.5 K swim as part of the course. Instead, event sponsors say the event will be turned into a duathlon consisting of a 3.1 mile run, the existing 20.6 mile bike race, and another 3.1 mile run.

The Virginia Department of Transportation and local Law Enforcement continue to report numerous road closures due to the ongoing flooding. As of Friday afternoon there were 12 road closures in Halifax (VA) and Mecklenburg Counties. Additional Road closures are possible in the advisory area.

Corps closes recreation areas as lake rises

A heavy downpour over a span of several days has sent enough water rushing downstream into Kerr Reservoir to force the closure of several recreation areas on the lake by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Flood levels are expected to top out at 310 feet above mean sea level — well below flood stage on Kerr Reservoir of 320 feet, but enough to interfere with boating and camping at some Corps recreation areas.
