Henderson, N.C. man drowns in Buggs Island Lake

A 27-year-old Henderson, N.C. man who drowned in Buggs Island Lake on Sunday afternoon has been identified as Larry Bobbitt, according to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. MCSO Cpl. Byrt Carnes was called to the day use area of Longwood Park near Clarksville late Sunday afternoon to investigate a possible drowning.

We have now had a year of experience living with the US Corps of Engineers’ new plan for managing the flow of water in the Roanoke River, commonly referred to as the Quasi-Run of the River, or QRR. Simply put, the QRR approach involves releasing flood waters held in Kerr Lake faster, which results in shorter duration flooding downstream.

5 kayakers pulled from river amid rough waters

Rescue efforts were underway Thursday just before lunchtime after five kayakers on the Roanoke River capsized in turbulent waters and were plunged into the water. Authorities received a call just before 11 a.m. in regard to a boating incident that occurred in the vicinity of Tailrace Park, just downstream of Kerr Dam, resulting in five women of various ages going overboard.

Three senior-aged men had to be rescued from the Roanoke River on Wednesday evening after their boat capsized, dumping them and their gear into the water. Mecklenburg County 911 received a call just before 7 p.m. from a subject who reported that a man approached his home from the river asking to contact 911.

The lake level has gone down to around 302 and now that our recreation areas are cleaned up and once again up to our standards, we have resumed charging the $5.00 day use fees for our ramps and beaches.

For the 12th straight year, Jeannette Brummitt and her relay team “Angels Among Us” hosted the Relay for Life Golf Tournament at Kerr Lake Country Club. And for the 12th straight year, the Bartholomew brothers were happy to attend. In her decade-plus of organizing this event, Brummitt — a survivor of cancer — has established quite a following.
