Road conditions on major interstates and highways in North Carolina are greatly improved today and Department of Transportation crews have turned their attention to clearing secondary roads, but there are still many patches of black ice and drivers should continue to be cautious, Governor Roy Cooper advised.

While road conditions continue to improve across areas affected by this week’s snowstorm, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is warning motorists to remain on the lookout for ice.

Below freezing temperatures are expected to continue through Sunday. This means even roads that have been cleared could have icy patches during the overnight hours and mornings.

State officials on Wednesday urged Virginians to prepare for a winter storm that could dump up to a foot of snow on parts of the commonwealth over the next few days. Gov. Terry McAuliffe declared a state of emergency at 2:20 p.m. Wednesday, authorizing state agencies, including the National Guard and Virginia State Police, to assist local governments in responding to the storm, which may impact roads and bridges.

With a snow storm bearing down on North Carolina, Gov. Roy Cooper declared a state of emergency Wednesday. The alert applies to impacted parts of the state, Cooper said, enabling necessary resources to be deployed in those areas. Counties in the east and northeast could see up to 8 inches of snow.
